It’s gooey. It’s sticky. It’s slime! Learn to make your own homemade slime using the video below.
Science Buddies posted a great video showing how to make slime.
Materials:
- Water
- Washable school glue (example: Elmer’s® glue)
- Baking soda
- Contact lens solution (containing both boric acid and sodium borate)
- Food coloring (pick any color you want! This is optional)
- Measuring spoons
- Measuring cup
- Bowl
- Spatula
- Resealable plastic bags or food storage containers
- In the mixing bowl, mix 1/2 cup of water, 1/2 cup of glue, and a 3-5 few drops of food coloring. Mix it well!
- Add 1/2 teaspoon baking soda and mix.
- Add 2-3 tablespoon contact lens solution and stir vigorously until the mixture starts removing itself from the edges of the bowl.
- Use your hands to knead the slime for 7-10 minutes.
- What happens when you stretch your slime? Squish it? Roll it into a ball and bounce it?
Observation questions:
What happens when you stretch your slime?
What happens when you squeeze it?
What happens if you roll it into a ball and bounce it?
Why do you think glue is important in this mixture? (Hint: Glue is made from long, thin, chain-like molecules called polymers. What do you know about crosslinking polymers?
Crossing makes the glue and slime thicker.
