Halloween Experiment: Static Dancing Ghost

?Dancing Ghosts ? I'm all about using the materials we already have out to create some fun! So we… | Halloween activities for kids, Balloons, Halloween activities

Materials:

  • A piece of tissue paper
  • Scissors
  • A balloon
  • A head of hair
  • Spooky Music!
  1. Use your scissors to cut a ghost shape in the tissue as shown about 2 inches long and add some eyes with a marker.
  2. Blow up the balloon and tie it. Then run the balloon it really fast through your hair for about 10 seconds. This will add a static charge!
  3.  Bring the balloon near the ghost in a slow and gentle fashion,
  4. The ghost will begin to rise toward the balloon.
  5. If the balloon is charged enough, the ghost will rise and float right up to the balloon.
  6. If you work on this a bit, you can turn on some scary music and have the ghost dance around!

So how does static work?

Rubbing the balloon through your hair will create negative charge electrons onto the surface of the balloon.

The electrons have the power to be able to pull light objects (with a positive charge) toward them – in our case – the tissue ghost! Enjoy!
