How to make engineering crystal geode eggs?
The magic of crystals never fails to amaze! Crystal experiments are a favorite way to teach about supersaturated solutions.
Please watch this video and make your own crystal geode egg!
HOW DOES IT WORK?
A crystal is a hard, solid substance made of molecules that bond together in specific patterns to form a shape with straight edges and flat surfaces.
If you made more than one type of egg crystal geode, you saw that not all crystals have the same shape or size.
Dissolving the crystals in hot water created what is called a “super-saturated solution.”
The salts took advantage of the energy of the hot water to help them dissolve until there was no more space between molecules in the solution.
As the solution cooled, the water lost its energy and the crystals are forced from the solution to become a solid again.
This happens slowly and the crystals have time to grow larger than they were when the experiment started.
Natural geodes in rock are form in much the same way as mineralized water seeps into air pockets in rock. This is also how rock candy crystals are formed!
